#16 Custom Companions
I just think that if we're only going to be able to have one companion, we should be able to customize their appearance the way we customize our own characters. I've heard that Anet said that they are going to make companions location-based. That would mean that your companion changes when you travel to different regions. I have been unable to confirm this myself, but if it is true then I think we can all agree, Anet can do better. I mean, this does not even solve the problem of Companion sand Henchies in the Continuous World!
I think it would be better for us to be able to create ourselves a companion to go with each character. We could then decide on a race and class which would complement the abilities of our character. They would be just as customizable as our characters and we could equip them with whatever armors and weapons we chose. In order to supply us with enough money to equipp two characters, companions would need not to decrease the drop rate, though. It might also be a good idea to allow players to create a reserve of companion characters parallel to their player characters. A certain number of companions would be available to each account and all companions on the account would be available to each player character. This would make the system a bit more flexible.

I can't say so much for certain anymore since it has been ages since I read the official statements and the GW2 feature magazine, but I do remember that they decided on one companion, and I think they said you would be able to customize their function and abilities, but, man is that way back.
I actually perfer that the companions are local specific, because for one, like the Heros and Henchmen in the original GuildWars, they could be beastmen, Centaurs, or even Golems, they may even play a key role in allowing access to certain areas, for instance, if the Charr and Human race are in steeped war, how does a human explore Charr territory and encounters without some sort of escort, if it is a static and particular companion, it cannot provide that level of integration and guidance.
Also, if companions are local specific, than they can also have various personalities, roles and interests, if you have a static companion, they can give them some sort of personallity, but no matter what you customize them as, their basically playing the role of some follower who has joined your cause and ventures with you where ever.
But most importantly, wile I like the Hero System alot, and it was very helpful, if we have a functional and working solo gameplay system, they are not neccessary, and the trouble had with equipping them is better lost.
I agree with being able to customize their role or choose from a selection of alternate role companions, but not with personal companions. They arn't neccessary, and you don't have to have specific companions just because they are tied to certain areas, they can have a small variety with a generic motive and work around other companions.
I think that it would be great to have a companion that is area specific, because it would add a sense of realism to the lore. I think, though, that you should be able to choose from a list of Companions (One for each profession) and choose one. Or maybe just choose from four different possible companions, each with a fixed profession.
i love the idea of a companion, in close to the same format of heroes, but heres an idea? why not use your other characters? use them as heroes, that way you get full customization and full loot collection
I imagine they wouldn't want you to get full loot collection. The idea of rationing loot is that you don't get everything at once, since then loot would soon become irrelevant and getting the best items is one of the main goals that keep people playing the game. People won't play even the most interesting missions if there is no loot reward.
alright, i agree with that, but i still like the idea of being able to use your other characters
In my opinion they should allow each character to have a customized companion that allows you to change its skills, armour, weapons, etc. But also keep the henchman/heroes from GW1 to tie in with locations and story. If you are given your own creation at the beginning of the game they will be with you through thick and thin and you will feel attached to them, then by halfway through the game you will feel like they are an important part of the plot and your character's team. So customizing companions won't take away form the story, they will add to it.
ok I have no clue what local whatever is. i been playing ranger since 2005. and I do not want to be told my pet cant be with me pick another that can be in prophecies and not from where ever. the freedom to have whatever pet you come across as you travel and charm them. Dyes used on animals? do you dye your dogs fur? really?
the latest being able to put in your very own place on the balthazar islands was an excellent idea. i wish you could bring one other player in with ya - like the hall of monuments make it so the rainbow phoenix is not charmable unless by yourself. problem solved. and i get to hang with my hubby. (storage access would be nice. but no biggy.)
lastly about pets. even though they have attack, defend, and heel. it would be nice to have a flag for the pet like the henchmen, so when i run up to pull my pet isnt along side but waiting.. like sit stay.. LOL.. flag would just be a simple way i suppose compared to a new sit button added to pet command. -shrug-
i would love that be able to just go in the character creation screen for your companion
